Avira Vulnerability Puts Users' Online Backup Data At Risk

A popular Anti-virus software Avira that provides free security software to its customers with Secure Backup service is vulnerable to a critical web application vulnerability that could allow an attacker to take over users’ account, putting millions of its users’ account at risk.

Avira is very popular for their free security software that comes with its own real-time protection module against malware and a secure backup service. Avira was considered to be the sixth largest antivirus vendor in 2012 with over 100 million customers worldwide.

A 16 year-old security researcher ‘Mazen Gamal’ from Egypt told The Hacker News that Avira Website is vulnerable to CSRF (Cross-site request forgery) vulnerability that allows him to hijack users’ accounts and access to their online secure cloud backup files.

Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF or XSRF) is a method of attacking a Web site in which an intruder masquerades as a legitimate and trusted user. All the attacker need to do is get the target browser to make a request to your website on their behalf by convincing the victim to click on a specially crafted HTML exploit page.

Basically, an attacker will use CSRF exploit to trick a victim into accessing a URL link that contains malicious requests which will replace victim’s email ID on Avira account with attacker’s email ID, compromising victim’s account in just one click, explained Gamal.

After replacing the email address, an attacker can easily reset the password of victim’s account through forget password option, as it will send the password reset link to attacker’s email ID only.

Once hijacked, the attacker would be able to retrieve all the online backup files the victim have on his/her AVIRA account by simply using the same credentials to login into the user’s Online backup Software or at
I found a CSRF vulnerability in Avira can lead me to full account takeover of any Avira user account,” Gamal said via an email to The Hacker News. “The impact of the account takeover allowed me to Open the Backup files of the victim and also view the license codes for the affected user.

dell disk read error

Hiya People - I have successfully managed to fix this error.

I too have experienced similar problem where for no reason our Dell Vostro 1510 laptop just stopped working without warning, no noises, no bumps, no spikes and no other significant identifiable reason to stop working.

Received the Blue Screen and after not being able to boot up in safe mode, or in safe mode with networking, or safe mode with command prompts.

The Blue Screen came up with :
error code : 0142
message error code : 2000-0142
message : harddrive 1 - self test unsuccessful = status 79

Another diagnostic message

Also got error messages during diagnostics, however the above seem to be the common theme of many other peoples problems.

After trawling through countless forums and numerous google combinations seeking info on this issue, no one seemed to be able to offer a solution to get the machine operational to be able to save data.

This is what I did after piecing together snippets of info from multiple websites and hours of frustration.

Insert your OS disk into your cd/dvd drive
As the machine boots up - it should have an option to hit F2 or F12
Hit the F12 key
This will give you the option of where to boot your machine from.
Select boot from CD/DVD drive

For me windows loaded some files and gave me an option to either install windows or repair.

I selected repair

I was then asked for the admin password -- typed it in.

It brings you to a command prompt :

Type in CHKDSK
Type in CHKDSK/R

Hit the ENTER key

Once your machine has finished and repairing the hard drive, type EXIT and press ENTER to restart your laptop.

I have also found another command that could be tried if the above fails. Bear in mind, i didnt have to do it, but will post it here anyway.

After the command prompt - type in FIXBOOT

According to the DELL website the error code 2000-0142 is a Drive Self Test failed error code.

This has worked out for myself and i do hope it works for you.
